The Brief
A better interface does not survive weak inventory.
MakeMyTrip filed for a $1 billion-plus domestic listing this week, and what rupee capital actually buys is contracted rooms and bus seats. In the same seven days, Air India's rebuilt app took the booking engine and payment orchestration in-house, and it now rebooks hotels and cabs from the home screen when a flight breaks. Yatra did something stranger: no consumer brand abroad, just its corporate platform licensed to Kanoo in Bahrain on a seven-year deal. None of the three is competing on a better screen. They are competing for the rooms and the seats themselves.
