The Brief

The more interesting move today isn't a launch — it's two groups quietly building things that don't screenshot well. A hotel group tying its loyalty programme to a rival chain's across two continents borrows an idea airlines settled decades ago: status that travels between competing networks is worth more than any single footprint, and it works entirely outside the discovery layer aggregators depend on. A design leader at an AI-coding company spends a conference talk arguing for what stays fixed while the tools underneath it change, at the exact moment craft is being treated as a commodity problem. Both bets are on structure — alliance plumbing, standing principles — outlasting whatever ships next quarter. The question worth carrying into the rest of the week: does either bet pay off before someone with a flashier interface convinces the market that structure was never the point.

Cursor's Head of Design — who joined from Notion earlier this year — used a public conference talk to argue for a set of building principles that hold constant regardless of how much AI changes the mechanics of shipping software, rather than framing the moment purely around new tooling capability.
